Priscilla Diaz (Jessica), Chris Sullivan (Shock), and Dominic Colon (aka Manny Spamboni), The Electric Company cast members, will join NCFL at the 19th Annual National Conference on Family Literacy! They will join up with the show’s producers and other team members for a special session about how the show addresses nation’s literacy issue in direct and relevant ways.

Back to School Library Grants from Dollar General Literacy Foundation

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is accepting applications for Back to School Library Grants. The grants provide funding to school libraries or media centers working to implement new or expand existing literacy programs, looking to purchase new technology or equipment to support literacy initiatives, and/or looking to purchase materials or software for literacy programs.

TFLP expands to Lincoln, NE

NCFL is excited to announce that Lincoln, Nebraska, is home to three new Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP) sites. The grant was announced this morning at a press event at West Lincoln Elementary School.

“This grant will help empower our parents with the skills necessary to help their children with homework and other school activities,” said Dr. Susan Gourley, superintendent, Lincoln Public Schools. “We also thank and commend the work of the National Center for Family Literacy for helping to create these opportunities.”

Conference Spotlight: Monica Holloway

Monica HollowayMonica Holloway is not only a critically acclaimed author, but also the impressive mother of Wills, a child with autism. Holloway will join NCFL’s conference in April to share her personal story about parent involvement in education for a special needs child, as told through her new memoir Cowboy and Wills, a portrait of family struggle and triumph aided by a remarkable dog that coaxes young Wills into the world.

Applications for the new Better World Books/NCFL Libraries and Families Award are now available!

Through this opportunity NCFL and Better World Books will reward and enhance existing family programming and expand literacy-building practices of families in library settings. The three $10,000 grants awarded each year will connect more families to their local libraries and expand their literacy efforts in new and innovative ways.
