2010 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year

NCFL is now accepting applications for 2010 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year. The application is available at www.famlit.org/ToyotaTeacher.
The winner will receive $7,500 for his or her family literacy program as well as a free trip to the 2010 National Conference on Family Literacy in San Antonio, Texas on April 11-13. Applications are due no later than February 24 at midnight Eastern Standard Time.
NCFL’s long-time partner, the American Library Association, has announced a new grant opportunity for public libraries in Dollar General communities. This spring, the "American Dream Starts @ your library" will award grants of $5,000 each to 70 libraries this spring.

Dollar General Literacy Foundation Grants
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is an incredible national and local supporter of literacy programs, including National Center for Family Literacy initiatives. The Foundation funds family literacy programs in each of the 35 states where they have stores and is offering grants up to $20,000 to family literacy service providers.
February 1 is the 50th anniversary of the Greensboro Sit-Ins. The protest continued through July 1960 when the counter at the Woolworth store in Greensboro was desegregated. You can participate in a virtual sit-in free by visiting NCFL’s website and the online activity “How Would You Feel?”
Looking for a fun, indoor activity to do as a family during these cold winter months? As the pioneer in Parents and Children Together Time (PACT) Time®, NCFL offers many activities that encourage families to spend meaningful time together. Parents and children of all ages can engage in literacy activities that bridge the gap between school and home.
The Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP) has found a new home, in NCFL’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville is now one of thirty cities nationwide to offer this revolutionary program. TFLP increases basic language and literacy skills among Hispanic and other immigrant families, and provides parents with the skills they need to help their children succeed in school. It specifically serves children in kindergarten to third grade and their parents.
