In the last several weeks, audiences have swarmed to The Blind Side movie, which tells the inspirational story of Michael Oher and the Tuohy family. Oher and his adoptive father, Sean Tuohy, will be keynote speakers at NCFL’s Annual Conference.

Looking for a good book this holiday season?

NCFL, in conjunction with its partners The UPS Store and Toys for Tots, released a recommended book list for children. The book list was released yesterday in tandem with a media tour led by Sharon Darling and Lieutenant General Pete Osman, USMC (ret.), President and CEO of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. The two shared the message of supporting literacy during the holiday season.

Talks about Literacy Underway on Capitol Hill

With the growing calls for reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, we are starting to see movement on Capitol Hill – and literacy education is taking center stage.

On Thursday, the Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education Subcommittee of the House Committee on Education and Labor held a hearing titled Improving the Literacy Skills of Children and Young Adults.

The story is a familiar one in family literacy – an illiterate teen mother is living a life of despair until a teacher helps her transform her life through education and encouragement.

This powerful story, produced by Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey, has been made into a movie that has won a Sundance Film Festival award. It’s also one that will be touting NCFL and the family literacy message.

Better World Books celebrates National Family Literacy Month

Better World Books is one of NCFL’s great literacy partners.  Here’s an update on what’s going on with BWB in celebration of National Family Literacy Month.
 
Children’s Books. For National Family Literacy Month, NCFL has created a category of children’s books for BWB that contains more than 100,000 books priced four for $10 with free shipping. It’s a great way to get your holiday shopping underway!  
 

National Family Literacy Day at the Museum

NCFL celebrated National Family Literacy Month yesterday with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History (NMAH).The Verizon Foundation made this wonderful event possible!

Staff from NCFL arrived early to help set up for the event.

 

Families from local Toyota Family Literacy Program sites were invited to be part of the celebration.
