Louisiana educator named Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year

Louisiana educator Kay Brown received the national 2010 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year award today at the National Conference on Family Literacy in San Antonio.

As part of the award given by Toyota and the National Center for Family Literacy, Brown’s Northeast Louisiana Family Literacy Consortium program will receive $7,500. Brown also has been featured on an electronic billboard in Times Square earlier this month.  READ MORE...

Acronym bee to showcase technology talent,
raise money for National Center for Family Literacy

The seventh annual Louisville Technology Acronym Bee will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, at the Mellwood Arts & Entertainment Center to benefit the National Center for Family Literacy. In a new twist on the old spelling bee, three-person teams from local technology companies and IT departments will decode obscure technology terms instead of obscure words. Toys for Tots: A Living Lesson in Determination
The 71-year-old son of a sharecropper, Alferd Williams is now a third-grader and has his own reasons for working hard in school. "I don't have a mother living, and I don't have a father living, so it's up to me how long I go to school and how well I learn," Williams told a gymnasium packed with fellow students at Edison Elementary School.
