Creating a Literate Nation by Leveraging the Power of the Family

Recap: Day Two at the National Conference on Family Literacy

Here’s a round-up of Day Two at NCFL’s Conference:

- NCFL Advisory Board member and 60 Minutes contributor Byron Pitts was the keynote speaker at the Monday Morning General Session. Pitts shared his message about the power of mothers and teachers who can assume the role of angels and life-coaches—and literally prevent any child from failing. Pitts’s memoir Step Out on Nothing is available from NCFL partner Better World Books. Better World Books is donating 100 percent of net profits on sales of this book purchased at www.betterworldbooks.com.

- Family literacy students Everado (Lalo) Macias and Sarah Wunderlich & Yenikhulhaka’ nyese (Leida Rodriguez) shared their personal stories. After two years in the Boulder Valley Family Literacy Program, Lalo has plans to go to technical school to begin a new career in mechanics. Sarah and Leida celebrate their native culture together in family literacy classes in the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin.

- Priscilla Diaz (aka Jessica), Chris Sullivan (aka Shock), and Dominic Colon (aka Manny Spamboni) from The Electric Company helped host a special session about how the show addresses the nation’s literacy issue in direct and relevant ways.

- The Banquet last night focused on honoring the past and empowering the future. At the event, NCFL celebrated its 20 year partnership with the Bureau of Indiana Education and its 10 year partnership with the Verizon Foundation. Debbie Lente-Jojola from BIE and Nancy Williams from Verizon Foundation were on hand for the celebration. Sir Ken Robinson also spoke at the event, encouraging participants to challenge themselves to experiment and discover new ways to approach life and work and help families succeed.
